FTA launches shipper case studies on the experience of utilising water freight to improve supply chains
The Freight Transport Association's Mode Shift Centre and Freight by Water have launched 'On board!' - a report detailing how a wide variety of freight customers are using water-based services to improve the quality of their supply chains.
Covering short-sea, coastal, roll-on/roll-off, bulk and inland waterways shipping, 'On board!' demonstrates the possibilities of water freight across a range of industry sectors. The report includes case studies from Argos, Typhoo, the Yorkshire Linen Company, the London Olympics, Network Rail and others.
Christopher Snelling, FTA's Head of Supply Chain Policy, said:
"These shippers' case studies show how water freight can be used to reduce costs and improve performance, as well as delivering carbon savings."
'On board!' is the result of an ongoing dialogue between FTA and the Department for Transport to explore the possibilities of increasing the use of alternative modes by UK shippers and has been endorsed by Mike Penning MP, Under Secretary of State for Transport. It is the follow-up to 'On track!', a report focused on rail freight, which was published in February.
'On board!' was launched at the Multimodal 2012 exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham. Copies are available from the FTA press office or can be downloaded here.
